Casino operator MGM China Holdings Ltd said the two properties operated in Macau were not affected by cybersecurity incidents that prompted the closure of some casinos and hotel computer systems at MGM Resorts International properties across the United States.

MGM Resorts is the controlling shareholder of MGM China. The latter operates the MGM Macau Casino Hotel on the Macau Peninsula and the MGM Kotai Resort (file photo) in the city’s Kotai district.

A spokesperson for the company told GGRAsia: “MGM China was not affected by the incident as it operates its own IT environment.”

“The incident began Sunday and some casinos and hotel computer systems at MGM resort buildings across the United States were shut down,” a company official told The Associated Press.

Media reports have reported that guests have complained that they can’t get money from online check-ins, credit card transactions, and ATMs and use their key cards to enter their hotel rooms. There have also been reports that the slot machines have gone dead. The Financial Times reported that some company websites remained unreachable on Tuesday.

“MGM Resorts recently identified a cybersecurity issue that affects the company’s specific systems,” the company said in a press release Tuesday. The company did not call the incident a cyberattack.

MGM Resorts added, “Immediately after detecting this issue, we began our investigation with the help of key external cybersecurity experts. We have also notified law enforcement and are taking steps to protect our systems and data, including shutting down certain systems.”

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation has publicly confirmed that it is investigating the case.

MGM Resorts said the investigation was “ongoing,” and the company was “working hard to resolve the issue.” It did not provide details on how many properties were affected by the cybersecurity incident, nor did it provide an estimate of losses from the shutdown of the system.

BBC News reports this is the second time in five years that MGM Resorts has confirmed a cybersecurity incident.

In 2019, one of the company’s servers was reportedly breached, and hackers stole more than 10 million customer records, according to the media.
