In Climate Pledge Arena on Sunday night, the No. 2 seed Iowa women’s basketball team defeated No. 5 seed Louisville, 97-83, to make it to the Final Four for the first time since 1993. To help Iowa break a 30-year Final Four drought, Caitlin Clark put on one of the best performances in NCAA Tournament history.
Caitlin Clark, a contender for national player of the year, achieved her 11th triple-double in her career with 41 points, 12 assists, and 10 rebounds. The native of Des Moines made NCAA Tournament history by posting the first triple-double with 40 points.
She also made history by becoming the first player to record more than 900 points and 300 assists in a single season.
As for the star of the game, Ryan Ruocco said it best: “There are 먹튀검증 stars and there are solar systems.” Caitlin Clark is the latter.
For the Hawkeyes, Clark wasn’t the only significant performer. McKenna Warnock scored 17 points by converting each pass she received from Clark. Prior to fouling out, Czinano had nine while Gabrielle Marshall added 14.
The range of defensive coverages that Clark and Louisville’s Hailey Van Lith encountered was the game’s main plot. Following an 8-0 run by Louisville to start the game, in which Van Lith accounted for six of those points, Iowa alternated between a 3-2 zone and a 1-2-2 zone with the goal of stopping ball screens in the middle of the floor.
Van Lith answered forcefully, scoring 11 points in the second quarter to cut Iowa’s lead to five points at the half. It’s nearly impossible to stop such a great scorer as Van Lith. Van Lith played the whole 40 minutes for the third consecutive NCAA Tournament game, finishing with 27 points. Louisville struggled to contain her with a smaller defender and occasionally lost her in transition, but the Cardinals did occasionally succeed when doubling her with bigger wing defenders.
In the third quarter, Louisville would trim Iowa’s advantage to one point before the Iowa avalanche struck. The Hawkeyes defeated Louisville 30-16 in the third quarter to increase their advantage to 19 going into the fourth. In the second half, Clark was the target of a box and one attempt by Louisville head coach Jeff Walz, but it was unsuccessful. Walz shook his head in disbelief as Iowa forced turnovers and Clark made challenging jumpers over every defender.
Caitlin Clark, a finalist for the 2023 Naismith national player of the year award, chased her game-winning rebounds and continued to score points with a stat line so eye-popping that ESPN placed a little “Caitlin Clark triple-double alert” band to the scoreboard for its show.
Van Lith and Clark had already encountered each other on the court. In 2019, the two shared a residence while they were members of the U.S.A. Basketball under-19 team. Prior to the game on Sunday, Clark referred to Van Lith as the Cardinals’ “engine.”
Coach Lisa Bluder of Iowa stated her desire for her team to treat this game similarly to all others before the contest. She used the catchphrase “be us” with her team and acknowledged that pressure sometimes lead to “some abnormal behavior.”
After the game, Louisville Coach Jeff Walz cited the high score, which was nearly twice as high as the previous regional final, which Louisiana State defeated Miami in. I believed we needed to get in the 80s, but you just have to give them credit, he added.
For the seventh time in a row, Louisville advanced to the round of 8. The Cardinals made it to the Final Four last year but lost to South Carolina, preventing them 토토 from moving on to the national championship game. In the Final Four on Friday in Dallas, Iowa will compete against either the top-seeded South Carolina or the No. 2-seeded Maryland.
