Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane has been nominated for the Tottenham Player of the Year by the fans.
“Kane has been named in the Tottenham category of the fans’ player of the year, with Son Heung-min leading the pack,” the Football Association of Great Britain reported on Monday (Jan. 1).
Kane was an iconic Tottenham striker until last season. In 430 career appearances for Spurs, he has amassed a staggering 278 goals and 64 assists, making him an iconic Spurs player. As the club’s all-time leading scorer, he was one of those players who was always expected to play for Tottenham.
But Kane wanted to win. After finishing second in the league and runner-up in the European Champions League with Tottenham, his desire to win grew. When Spurs failed to qualify for the European Champions League in the 2022-2023 season, speculation spread that Kane would leave the club.
German giants Bayern Munich were one of the teams to reach out to Kane. The Bavarians had been hungry for a frontline striker since Robert Lewandowski’s departure to Barcelona, and when they learned of Kane’s desire to leave, they immediately began pursuing him. It was a difficult process of convincing chairman Daniel Levy, but the Bavarians finally got their man before the transfer window closed, and Kane completed his move to Tottenham. Since his move to Munich, Kane has scored 22 goals and provided seven assists in 17 games, proving his worth far beyond Tottenham.
Kane has been nominated for the Tottenham Player of the Year by the fans. The poll, run by UK-based Rich Sports, is available through the Mirror and is voted for by fans. There is a Footballer of the Year category for each league, male and female, and a player of the year category for each Premier League team.
Along with the Footballer of the Year category, Kane was nominated as a Tottenham player in the Premier League Team of the Year category. He was nominated alongside Son Heung-min, James Maddison and Guglielmo Vicario.
In introducing the nominees, Football England said: ‘Kane parted company with the club in the summer, but it’s only fitting that he should be shortlisted for the Fans’ Choice Footballer of the Year award in 2023. He became Tottenham’s all-time leading scorer, netting 32 goals in all competitions for the club in the 2022-2023 season. In a disappointing season in which they finished eighth, Kane’s contribution to Tottenham in the run up to last season was enormous, with Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino saying, “I don’t want to think about where Spurs would have finished in the table if Kane hadn’t scored goals.
On Son, who has been Kane’s best partner, Mourinho said: ‘Last season was a mixed bag, but this season we are seeing his best form once again. He has played a big part in the team’s great start to the season. With the captain’s armband, Heung-min is showing a different side to his game and leading by example. Maddison and Vicario also praised their performances this season, saying they deserved the nomination.
However, even if Kane is nominated, it is doubtful that many Tottenham fans will choose him as their player of the year. Kane has had a bit of a falling out with Spurs fans since his move to Bayern, with comments about Tottenham and winning the title.
Meanwhile, Football Transfer Tavern has revealed that Son Heung-min is leading the pack in the Tottenham Player of the Year category, receiving the most support from fans.
