The new year has just started, but Alberta’s only regulated iGaming platform continues to bolster its offerings for players. Some of the latest additions to Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis’s PlayAlberta include award betting, which arrived just in time for the 81st edition of the Golden Globes. Allowing players to place their bets on the winners in different categories.

AGLC reminds residents that when wagering on PlayAlberta, revenue stays in the province. All proceeds from the platform are invested in the provincial government while supporting key programs and services. For the fiscal 2022-23, the province’s all gaming activities provided around CA$1.5 billion in net income to the general revenue fund.

Highlights from Sunday’s Ceremony

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer took over the awards, as it won Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director, and Best Actor – Drama. However, this may have surprised bettors in Alberta, approximately 27% of the wagers were on Nolan to take home the award. Meanwhile, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie accumulated around 38% of the bets on the platform.

However, Barbie also blanked in other categories. The film had massive support from players in Alberta as it accumulated nearly 66% of the bets to win Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. The statue was given to Poor Things. According to AGLC, only 8% of the bettors of the iGaming platform backed the Yorgos Lanthimos film to be crowned in the category.

Steve Lautischer, Executive VP, Business Development, AGLC said the platform again evolves and offers thrilling options for its many players. He added the Crown is pleased to expand that into 2024 with the introduction of entertainment markets before the Academy Awards season. Now, users of the website can predict the Golden Globes, the Emmy Awards or the Academy Awards.

Other highlights from Sunday’s awards include Cillian Murphy winning Best Actor- Drama while capturing 38% of the bets on the platform. Bradley Cooper who remained second got 22% of the wagers. Meanwhile, for Best Actress – Drama, Lily Gladstone took approximately 32% of the placed bets, while the runner-up in the category, Cailee Spaeny accumulated 21%.

Bolstering Offerings

In August 2023, AGLC made some significant improvements to PlayAlberta as it launched a revamped version of the online gambling platform. For the initiative, the Crown partnered with NeoGames’ subsidiary, BtoBet, which delivered its fully managed sportsbook solution, delivering one-of-a-kind sports betting entertainment for local players. Full migration was completed in Q3 of 2023.

In the past, AGLC has utilized some creative ways of advertising the platform, including “A Better Way to Play”. It was inspired by classical horror films such as The Shining, Scream, and The Warriors to remind local bettors that the platform is the only safe and regulated online gaming portal in the province. It features numerous protections to safeguard consumers, which cannot be said about offshore websites.
