Ryu Hyun-jin, who finished his FA contract with Toronto in the U.S. professional baseball, is said to deliver his luggage used in Canada to South Korea, suggesting that his return to Hanwha has begun to count.
According to the local Korean community in Canada, Ryu Hyun-jin decided to send two 5-ton trucks worth of luggage stored in Toronto to Korea on the 18th (the 19th, Korean time), KBS news confirmed.
Ryu Hyun-jin moved his luggage from his Toronto home to a local logistics company’s warehouse in November last year after his contract with Toronto ended. Ryu Hyun-jin, who had been trying to transfer to the Major League, seems to be in the process of returning to the KBO League as he has decided to send all his luggage to Korea.
In response, a high-ranking Hanwha official told KBS, “It is true that we have been trying our best to sign Ryu Hyun-jin since the beginning of this year,” but “We have not yet reached a contract agreement or the final stage.”
It is known that it takes about two months for Ryu Hyun-jin’s luggage to return to Korea via Vancouver via train.
Ryu Hyun-jin entered the U.S. stage through posting (closed competitive bidding), not FA in 2013, so if he returns to Korea, he can only sign with Hanwha, which holds the right.
Ryu Hyun-jin, who joined Hanwha in 2006 and won the Rookie of the Year and MVP title from his first year since his debut, played for Hanwha until the 2012 season before advancing to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Major League through posting (closed competitive bidding).
In 2019, Ryu Hyun-jin was ranked first in the Major League’s ERA (2.32) and was active with 14 wins and 5 losses, ranking second in the National League Cy Young Award voting.
Ryu Hyun-jin, who later qualified as an FA, signed a large contract with Toronto for four years worth $80 million and 106.7 billion won in Korean money and became an FA again after the 2023 season.
Ryu Hyun-jin, who was agonizing over staying in the Major League and returning to Hanwha, has not decided on a destination in the U.S. until recently when the Major League spring camp began.
