No. 11 Jeonbuk Hyundai defeated No. 2 Ulsan HD at Jeonju Castle to clinch the Hyundai derby after five games.
Jeonbuk defeated Ulsan 2-0 in the 24th round of the Hana Bank K League 1 2024 at Jeonju World Cup Stadium on Tuesday.
With the win, Jeonbuk ended Hyundai’s four-match derby winless streak (1-3). With three more points, Jeonbuk (23 points) moved up to 10th place. After winning for the first time in nine games against Jeju United at home in Round 22, Jeonbuk suffered a heavy 0-4 defeat at 사설 토토사이트 Gimcheon Sangsang in Round 23. This time, they bounced back with a convincing win over rival Ulsan.
With ‘Legend’ Eningyo (79 goals-Brazil) looking on, Jeonbuk refused to give up on the win. Andrigo, who was recently loaned to Jeonbuk, had a strong performance in his return to the K League with one goal and one assist.
Ulsan, who were hoping to regain the lead, suffered a surprise setback and are now in second place (42 points). It was the first loss in three official matches since Hong Myung-bo left as national team coach. Ulsan was forced to play four matches in ten days, and they were unable to prevent the defeat. The team’s first game with the Inhabi-Kyu-Yago lineup didn’t show much promise.
Faced with the prospect of relegation from a top club, Jeonbuk played to the end with the support of their fans. “Don’t give up,” said Jeonbuk fans. We won’t stop cheering,’ and they chanted Jeonbuk until the very end.
It wasn’t easy. After a 0-0 first half, Jeonbuk made a change by introducing Hernandez-Andrigo and others. Ulsan, with Lee Min-gyu up front, utilized the Yago-Jung Woo-young substitution in the second half.
It was Jeonbuk who took the initiative and pushed forward. Buoyed by two shots from Hernandez, Jeonbuk broke through Ulsan’s goal in the 33rd minute of the second half. Andrigo drove down the right flank and sent in a cross that Thiago rattled the Ulsan net with a diving header. The long-awaited goal turned Jeonju into a frenzy.
There were some heartbreaking moments. In the 39th minute, Ulsan’s Lee Min-kyu broke into the box and fired a left-footed shot that went wide of the side of the goal, sending coach Kim Doo-hyun’s chest heaving.
After escaping the danger, Jeonbuk sealed the 2-0 victory with Andrigo’s right-footed shot from a counterattack in second-half stoppage time. Andrigo had a hand in both goals and had a strong debut. “Don’t give up the game. We will not give up our support,” the Jeonbuk fans chanted, and the players responded with victory.
