Last week, the City of Greater Sudbury thanked the Ontario Lottery and Game Company for its continued community funding at a check-giving event in Tom Davis Square. From April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023, the city spent nearly C$1.93 million to host Gateway Casino Sudbury.
Ontario shares proceeds from land – based casino operations with communities acting as organizers of those casinos through the municipal contribution agreement. There is a difference as payments to each municipality are calculated based on a formula that is uniformly applied to offline gaming properties of all crown companies across the province.
Greater Sudbury Mayor Paul Lefebvre thanked the Crown Agency for its continued support for the community at the ceremony. He explained that OLG’s multi-million dollar contribution to the city over the years provided the growth and well-being of the municipality. He added that OLG played an important role in developing local communities.
OLG’s casino funds are provided to support essential improvements in community infrastructure. The Crown Corporation’s annual payments are also stored in the city’s general revenue account for use in capital projects such as road construction. Since the casino opened in 1999, the city has earned over C$47.83 million in non-tax game revenues.
Kathleen Divine, senior municipal relations manager at OLG, said Crown is proud to be contributing to Great Sudbury for over 23 years now and looks forward to building on that support. She also said that every year 100% of Crown Agency revenue is reinvested in Ontario to support local priorities.
In addition, Mr Devine said OLG’s revenue is important for Sudbury and statewide, as it helps build stronger communities by supporting all kinds of schemes. It ranges from important local programs to local festivals. Finally, she added that she also considers the efforts of employees at Gateway Casino Sudbury, where the city also played a major role in the process, important.
Previously, Greater Sudbury planned to provide another casino amenity in the area as part of the Kingsway Entertainment District, a multi-million event center. However, after years of planning, in July 2022, the city decided to reject a budget of C$215 million for the outer stadium, ending the city’s involvement in the project.
Prior to June 2022, the city reported the results of KED’s proposal request for general contractors. There were only two companies before the June 16, 2022. Ball Construction/TESC Construction Inc.와 PCL Constructors Canada Inc.였습니다. However, it remains to be seen how the project will develop with the support of the city.
