The number of suspicious transaction reports reported to Macau authorities by Macau casino operators rose 169.6 percent year-on-year in the nine months to Sept. 30. That’s according to data released Monday by the Macao Financial Intelligence Agency.

These reports were 2,335, accounting for 73.5% of all transactions flagged in the city during this period, compared with 866 notifications sent by gaming companies in the first nine months of the previous year.

In the first nine months of 2022, before Macau’s domestic and international travel normalized, game-related STR accounted for only 51.6% of the total.

Macau’s casinos gross gaming revenue (GGR) for the nine months to September 30 increased 305.3% year-on-year to approximately 128.95 billion pounds ($16.1 billion).

Casinos in the city are required to report transactions of more than 500,000 MOPs to local governments, but that does not mean such transactions are marked as questionable.

In the first nine months of 2023, the total number of STRs received by the Financial Supervisory Service was 3,178, up 89.5% from 1,677 the previous year.

“The change was mainly due to an increase in the number of STRs reported in the gaming sector,” the ministry said.

During the latest reporting period for the “financial institutions and insurance companies” sector, the tally of flagship transactions edged up to 617 from 611 a year earlier.

The most recent figure represented 19.4% of all suspected transactions reported over the past nine months, compared with 36.5% of STR a year ago.

Suspicious transactions under the “Other Agencies” heading were tallied at 226 this time, up 13.0% from 200 in the same period of 2022. These STRs were 7.1% of the total through Sept. 30, compared with 11.9% contributions in the first nine months of last year.
