Maria Helena de Senna Fernandez, director of Macau’s government tourism agency, said she was “hopeful” the city would have 100,000 visitors every day during Qingming, Macau’s largest tourist market, a holiday in mainland China, and Easter, the holiday season only in Hong Kong and Macau.
“We are targeting 100,000 people compared to 70,000 to 80,000 non-holiday days at the moment,” Ms Sena Fernandez told local media at Thursday’s event.
Mainland authorities have designated this year’s Qingming Festival – a time when Chinese people around the world honor their ancestors – as Apr. 4 (Thursday) to 6 (Saturday). In Hong Kong, Macau’s second most important tourist resource market, the specific holiday is limited to Apr. 4.
In Hong Kong, like Tsing Ming, the Easter season, which observes the lunar timetable, runs from March 29 (Friday) to April 1 (Easter Monday) this year.
Macau’s tourism boss noted that over the two festivals, “we don’t expect the number of visitors to be as high during the Chinese New Year holiday.”
During the Lunar New Year holiday, which includes mainland China, from Feb. 10 to Feb. 17, Macau’s total number of visitors reached nearly 1.36 million, an average of nearly 170,000 per day.
Dragon Trail International, a marketing and research organization focused on mainland consumers, said in a recent travel sector review that outbound travel by that sector, or crossing mainland boundaries, could exceed pre-pandemic 2019 levels by 2025. This year, such a scale could reach “80%” of 2019.
Citing figures from China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the agency noted that mainlanders traveled 3.6 million overseas during the Lunar New Year, or 57% of the 6.31 million trips made in 2019.
“The five-day holiday in China around Labor Day on May 1 will be a significant time on the trend, followed by the autumn golden holiday that covers China’s National Day on October 1,” Dragon Trail International said in a review.
