Macao casino operator Galaxy Entertainment Group is in the process of opening its “first overseas business development office” in Tokyo, Japan, the Macao casino operator said in its first-half earnings on the 3rd (local time).

The company added, noting that it also has representatives in the Thai and Korean capitals, respectively, “We plan to open additional offices in Bangkok and Seoul.”

“This is in line with our commitment to the Macau government to increase the number and flow of high-stakes overseas visitors to Macau.”

All six Macau game operators have had to work to increase the number of overseas customers entering Macau and improve the volume and type of non-gaming products they offer as part of a new 10-year gaming contract that began in January to the Macau government.

Galaxy Entertainment has pledged to invest $28.4 billion ($3.52 billion) in new MOPs during the concession period, of which $96.8% of MOP $27.5 billion is estimated to be spent on exploring non-game customer markets.

All operators will be required to make incremental investments amounting to 20% of their initial commitments over a 10-year period if total annual casino gaming revenue across the market exceeds MOP 180 billion.

In December, in a public announcement about Galaxy Entertainment’s reinvestment plans, the company noted that it had “established overseas offices in Singapore, Thailand, and South Korea and launched a series of marketing initiatives such as travel packages in Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, the Philippines, and Vietnam.”

Galaxy Entertainment already has knowledge of the Japanese consumer market a few years ago, looking at investment opportunities in the country’s early casino market.

However, in May 2021, the group said it would not participate in Yokohama’s Request for Proposal (RFP) process regarding the Japanese metropolitan area’s search for a commercial partner at the casino resort.

Yokohama itself fell out of the reckoning in September of that year after the casino sceptic was elected current governor.

A number of investment analysts have already highlighted the popularity of casino gambling among Thais in connection with Galaxy Entertainment’s advance through its Bangkok office.

Thailand is currently considering legalizing casinos. Historically, Thailand has formed a significant portion of its customers at many casino locations in Poipet, on Cambodia’s border with Thailand.
